The Five Rememberances

Gay Bradshaw · October 10, 2025

Course Description

I was sad one day and went for a walk; I sat in a field.

A Rabbit noticed my condition and came near.

It often does not take more than that to help at times –

to just be close to creatures who are so full of knowing, so full of love,

They just gaze with their marvelous understanding.

– Saint John of the Cross

More than ever, in this human-ravaged world of uncertainty, our Earth and Animal kin need what the Rabbit gave Saint John: understanding and love. This is the heart of accompaniment. To accompany our Earth and Animal kin with compassion and resilience, we must cultivate wholeness and balance for ourselves. By facing our fears and vulnerabilities, we increase our capacity to support others mindfully and compassionately, living fully with intention, purpose, and appreciation. This is the core message of the Buddha’s lessons on impermanence, the Five Remembrances. Drawing on these teachings, this course explores the meaning and significance of life’s challenges and inevitabilities – aging, sickness, death and loss – as they relate to us personally, and to the Plant and Animal kin whom we accompany. In this way, we deepen our understanding of life and move into greater alignment with Nature’s values and ethics.
